What is a Live Scan?
A modern, paperless fingerprinting process used for background checks.
Overview
Live Scan is an inkless, electronic fingerprinting process that captures your fingerprints digitally and transmits them directly to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and/or the FBI for a background check. It replaces the traditional ink-and-roll method with a faster, cleaner, and more accurate digital process.
Live Scan is required for many professional licenses, employment positions, and volunteer roles in California. The requesting agency (your employer, licensing board, or organization) will provide you with a Request for Live Scan Service form that includes the ORI number needed to process your submission.
